The City of Durand is very interested in industrial development and we are excited about the prospect of new facilities coming to our community.
The City of Durand is located on Interstate 69 which is the primary east-west regional access to the area. The primary north south access to the area is Interstate 75 approximately 15 miles from Durand. Genesee County's Bishop International Airport is also approximately 15 miles from Durand. The City of Durand is a major hub for railroad activity with several main lines running through the city. The availability of most modes of transportation is a major asset to our community.
The Property:
The Industrial Park Property is located on Durand Road just north of
Lansing Road. The site is visible from I-69.
Utilities:
The site is currently serviced with electric and natural gas provided
by Consumers Energy.
Water:
In 1995 the City of Durand completed an upgrade to the municipal water
system. The cost of this upgrade was $2.75 million. This upgrade
included a new iron removal treatment plant, improvements to our existing
wells, the addition of two new wells and a 500,000 gallon above ground
storage tank. When added to the 400,000 gallon water tower, the City
of Durand now has 900,000 gallons in storage capacity, more than adequate
to serve our needs now and into the future. The water system now
has a capacity to provide up to 1.5 million gallons of water per day.
Our current usage is approximately 400,000 gallons per day, allowing plenty
of room for growth and development in the city.
Sewer:
The City of Durand operates a Waste Water Treatment Plant which has
a current capacity of 800,000 gallons per day. The average daily
usage is 400,000 gallons per day. This leaves us with an unused capacity
of 400,000 gallons per day or approximately 50% availability for additional
growth.
Economic Incentives:
Depending on the nature of the project, capital investment and jobs
created, the City of Durand may offer economic incentives which may include
tax abatements of up to 50% for up to 12 years for personal and real property
taxes. We would also work with the Michigan Economic Development
Corporation to provide job training grants and other assistance as available.
Education & Training:
A few years ago the Durand Community
Schools began a study of its facilities. Following the study
the school district sought approval from the voters to proceed with the
construction of a new Middle School along with the other recommendations.
Construction on the new Middle School began in the spring of 1998 and the
facility opened for the fall 1999 school year. Along with the new
Middle School the voters also approved millages for maintenance and technology
improvements. The Durand Area Schools are undergoing constant improvements
both in facilities and curriculum.
In addition to the local school district, working and living in the
City of Durand offers various opportunities for additional training and
higher learning. Located within a 30 mile radius are several educational
institutions that offer classes/training opportunities in vocations as
well as traditional academics. These schools include Michigan State
University (East Lansing), University of Michigan-Flint, Mott Community
College (Flint), Lansing Community College (Lansing) and Baker College
(Owosso).
Recreation & Community Activities:
In addition to school sports and extra-curricular activities, the Durand
area offers many opportunities for recreational and community participation.
The youth in our community can participate in bowling, soccer, baseball,
football, dance lessons, karate lessons, after school activity hour at
the elementary schools, summer youth program in the city parks as well
as many other cultural experiences some of which are available through
the Durand Branch of the Shiawassee District Library.
For adults in the community, educational and enrichment programs are
available through the local school district. For those who are interested
in the performing arts, the Shiawassee Community Players produce stage
productions several times during the year. Recreational activities
for adults include softball leagues, bowling and volleyball. The
Durand area also has several public golf courses which offer men’s, women’s
and coed leagues.
The Durand Area Chamber of Commerce
sponsors many events throughout the year including Citizen of the Year,
promotional events, annual golf outing, city wide sidewalk/garage sales,
Concerts in the Park, End of Summer Cruisin’, Glowball Tournament (a night
golf tournament), annual state of the city address as well as other membership
services.
Other special events are sponsored by civic clubs/fraternal organizations
such as the Rotary Club, Lions Club, Knights of Columbus, Masonic Lodge
and other affiliated organizations, the various school organizations and
the many other civic organizations that are available in our community.
As you can see the City of Durand has many opportunities and a high quality of life to offer any prospective industry.
